Lodge to Hut: Alpine Flowers of the Presidential Range
06/14/2018 - 06/17/2018

The alpine tundra is a rare habitat in New England, and the shoulder of Mt Washington and the Presidential Ridge offer the conditions where alpine plants, such as diapensia, and alpine azalea, can survive and even thrive. Experiencing it in Spring bloom is a special treat. Join us on this hut-to-hut natural history adventure, as we explore the adaptations of plants and animals to live in such a challenging yet stunning environment. Backcountry lodging and hearty meals are provided at AMC's Lakes of the Clouds and Mizpah Spring Huts. We'll drive up the famed Mount Washington Auto road and hike across the Alpine Garden and the onto Lakes of the Clouds Hut. The next day, we traverse the southern Presidential Range to Mizpah Spring Hut, giving us ample opportunity to explore the ridge and listen for white throated sparrows along the way. We will examine and discuss alpine adaptations and compare alpine plant communities. Program includes copy of AMC's Field Guide to New England Alpine Summits. This trip involves moderate/difficult hiking on steep, rocky terrain. Weather can change quickly and become quite cold and windy above treeline. Participants should be in good hiking shape, have proper hiking boots and clothing, and be prepared for a summer alpine adventure! ITINERARY: Day 1 : Meet for dinner and pre-trip orientation in the beautiful White Mountains. We meet at the AMC Joe Dodge Lodge in Pinkham Notch. Please arrive anytime between 3pm and 5pm to check in and get comfortable. For those who would like to get out before dinner, lodge staff can recommend short hikes in the area. Meet your Guides in the dining room for a 6 pm dinner, and review of the trip itinerary, gear needs and other important information. We'll overnight in the lodge. Dinner included. Day 2: We'll drive up the infamous Mount Washington Auto Road to the Alpine Garden Trail. The Eastern shoulder of Mountain Washington is host to amazing and unique alpine plant communities. We'll spend the day observing and identifying the plants that call this area home and hike to Lakes of the Clouds hut, 3.0 miles with 800 ft. elevation gain. We'll have dinner and spend the night at the hut Day three: We'll wake up and have a hearty, home cooked breakfast. This day is almost exclusively above tree line and travels along the oldest maintained hiking trail in the United States, the Crawford Path. Weather permitting, we'll hike over Mt. Monroe, Mt. Franklin, Mt. Eisenhower, and last but not least, Mt. Pierce (with an alternate route around the summits in inclement weather). We'll enjoy the abundance of rare alpine plants and flowers as the Crawford Path follows the ridgeline
